Former Crimson Tide, NFL star Kevin Turner details his battle with ALS in 'American Man' (with video)

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- As a rock-steady fullback for the Alabama Crimson Tide, and later with the NFL’s New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, Kevin Turner thrived on playing on the big stage, in front of huge crowds of 70,000 and more.
He put on his helmet, buckled his chinstrap and went to work — butting heads, breaking tackles and shaking it off and doing it all over again.
This afternoon, the 43-year-old Turner, who, two years ago, was diagnosed with a debilitating disease that no one has ever survived, will be on a relatively smaller stage, although the emotions likely will run just as high.
The documentary “American Man” — which details Turner’s battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS — makes its debut in Turner’s home state today at the Alabama Theatre during this weekend’s Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival.
